England and Welsh Drawn Together for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was overseen by rugby legends such as former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side together with Wales will face off in an identical pool for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a highly-anticipated early encounter in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This pairing mirrors their infamous clash in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at Twickenham contributed to the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Other Notable Pool Draws

Ireland alongside Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool together, replicating the situation from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, Ireland claimed a 36-14 victory, with their opponents unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, who each made a strong impression as surprise packages in France, complete that same group.

Notably, the victors of these two groups cannot meet defending champions and world number one South Africa before the showpiece match, assuming the Springboks win their assigned pool.

Knockout Ramifications

If the pools conclude according to the current global standings, further leading contenders like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would remain separated from the likes of England and Ireland all the way to the championship decider.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the other top-ranked nation on the same half of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Draw Major Fixture

Tournament hosts Australia find themselves together with their great rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Pool A.

The Wallabies will kick off the tournament in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee match designed to jump-start the event.

In other groups, holders the Springboks have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and Romania. The French team are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will face the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the World Cup grows to twenty-four nations from the twenty who took part in France.

The 2027 tournament will feature a last-16 stage for the very first time in the competition's existence.

Although the victor of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the game's biggest beasts early on, they will meet the runner-up from Pool B – most likely the Italians – in the last 16.

Four of the other six pool winners will face a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
