Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks Europe's True Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a misguided assessment of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies pose an existential risk to European civilization. However, this argument is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The actual danger facing Europe is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Gap Separating the US and Europe

The data paint a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry 13.5% increase for the EU. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, about 50% of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Question

This widening economic gap is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a vital question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Most analysts agree it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe entering at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a genuine capital markets union, which limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is divided among 27 separate systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to advance substantial change. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping changes.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses significant strengths: skilled workforce, excellent schools and universities, and world-class labs. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically boost economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
